The Prince Edward was built-in 1930, at the peak of the wonderful years of cinema. Their namesake was the Prince of Wales during the time. The architect for the building was none other than Edward A. Stone, among the co-designers of Piccadilly Theatre 2 yrs earlier in the day. As the exterior appeared rather severe to some, the inner of the theater was plushly and lavishly decorated in soft shades of fuchsia and gold. Sitting 1650 patrons, the audience presented completely upholstered, tip-up seats, of quite the rage at the time. Together with the third largest point in most of London, the theater was designed for over-the-top musicals, dramas, revues, and also picture. The proscenium arch which is why it was mentioned was undoubtedly a masterpiece, with features and niches by Rene Lalique.Performances in the Prince Edward began in an extremely inauspicious manner. The initial offering there, beginning April 3, 1930, was the musical comedy Rio Rita, starring Geoffrey Gwyther and Edith Day. The show have been a definite hit in New York's Ziegfeld Theatre, but was obtained quite coolly in London. After only 59 routines the show was cancelled. Another offering at the cinema started in October 1930 and was relatively effective. The audio Nippy starred Binnie Hale, a fantastic box-office appeal at that time. The large phase made possible a thorough re-creation of an Austin saloon. Following Nippy a number of short runs involved the extravagant Fanfare with Bernard Clifton, which closed after just three weeks.After many years of less-than effective cabarets and trade shows, the theatrical world of London was amazed when Aladdin was shuttered in January 1935 without sufficient resources to pay for the actors. With the purchase of the home by way of a syndicate, the Prince Edward was about to undergo massive changes.
