Lisbon, the money of Portugal, is situated at a point where the Tagus River runs in to the Atlantic Ocean. The downtown heart of-the city is built over seven hills, that are too extreme for vehicular access. The region, therefore, could be achieved by an elevator and three funicular services.Brief History-the EarthquakeThe foundation of the area goes to 300,000 years. The most crucial function of Lisbon's history is the earthquake that happened on the All Saints Day Catholic holiday, November 1, 1775 at 9.20 am.It was probably one the most disastrous events in the history of the world. The quake destroyed 85% of Lisbon's buildings including the Royal Palace along with its priceless gifts and killed not quite 100,000 out of 275,000 people. When the people rushed to the open area of the docks for safety, they watched the sea water recede baring the sea bed covered over with the shipwrecks and other lost things. Moments later, approximately 50 feet high tsunamic wave came crashing into the city sweeping away tens of thousands of people. And if all of this was not enough to reduce the city into a rubble, the chaotic tides broke open the cooking gas lines and lights which caught fire ending into a fire storm. The fire burned down several houses including Lisbon's biggest hospital in addition to millions of patients in it.It was the type of hardship the likes of which are mentioned only in mythologies and epics. Two exciting events occurred during this devastationFirst, several animals thought the danger and left to higher ground for safety before the occurrence of the earthquake and the birth of the tidal waves. This is the first ever documented trend in Europe.Second, King Joseph1 and his family along side the Prime Minister, SebastiAo de Melo, kept secure while they had left the area for a holiday following the guidance of one of his daughters to leave Lisbon [http://www.sbo.bz/sbobet sbobet].The King was so traumatized he refused to live in stone and mortar houses and spent the rest of his life in tents and pavilions on the slopes of Ajuda in the suburbs of Lisbon. It was just after his death when his daughter Maria 1 ordered the construction of the Royal Palace of Ajuda that still stands at the point of the old tented encampment. The day after the devastationThe Prime Minister and the King increased into action soon after the loss. Feed the living" and "bury the dead, the Prime Minister is reported to possess informed the children. There is no time to hide the tens of thousands of decomposing corpses while they might spread the disease. Therefore unlike the wishes of the people and the priests, the corpses were delivered into the barges and dumped into the watery plots of the ocean. The government announced powerful and deterrent punishment for the anti-social elements and built gallows at substantial points in the city and these indulging in such actions were performed publicly. The architects and engineers removed the city of all the garbage of destruction and renovation began in full swing. The first seismologically strong Pombaline building, popularly called the Pombaline Downtown or Baixa Pombalina along with big wide paths got up in the town which testifies to the vision and experience of the King and the Prime Minister. The contemporary Lisbon, with its marked contrasts and numerous shocks is one of the most remarkable capital cities in Europe.
