The dogs which take their name from the island of Newfoundland interest all lovers of animals. There are now two established types, the black and the white and black. There are also bronze-coloured dogs, however they are rare. The black selection of the Newfoundland is essentially black in colour; but this does not mean that there could be no other colour, for many black Newfoundlands have some white marks. In fact, a marking on the chest is considered typical of the real breed. Any white on the top or human anatomy would place canine in the other than black variety. The black color should preferably be of a dull jet look which approximates to brown. In another than black school, there may be white and brown, bronze, and black and black. The latter predominates, and in this color, beauty of marking is very important. The mind should be black with a white muzzle and fire, and the legs and body should be white with large patches of black on the saddle and areas, with perhaps other little black spots on the body and legs. Besides color, the kinds should conform to the same standard. The top should really be broad and substantial, but in no sense heavy to look at. The muzzle should be short, square, and clear cut, eyes relatively wide apart, deep set, dark and small, not showing any haw; ears small, with close area carriage, lined with great short hair (there should be no fringe to the ears), phrase saturated in intelligence, dignity, and kindness. The body should be long, square, and massive, loins strong and well filled; chest deep and broad; legs quite straight, relatively short compared to the length of the body, and powerful, with round bone well covered with muscle; feet big, round, and close. The tail must be just long enough to achieve just underneath the hocks, free from kink, and never curled within the back. The caliber of the coat is very important; the coat must certanly be very dense, with lots of undercoat; the outer coat somewhat severe and quite right. The looks generally speaking should show a dog of great energy, and very effective for his construct and size, moving easily with the body swung freely involving the legs, which gives a slight roll in walking. As regards measurement, the Newfoundland Club standard offers 140 pounds. to 120 lbs. weight for a dog, and 110 pounds. to 120 lbs. for a bitch, having an average height at the shoulder of 27 inches and 25 inches respectively; but it is uncertain whether dogs in proper condition do conform to both needs. When rearing puppies give them soft food, such as well-boiled rice and milk, the moment they will lap, and, fleetingly a short while later, scraped lean meat. Newfoundland puppies require a lot of meat to encourage proper growth. The puppies should escalation in fat at the rate of 3 pounds. a week, and this demands plenty of flesh, bone and muscle-forming food, plenty of meat, equally raw and cooked. Milk can also be good, however it requires to be increased with casein. The key of developing full-sized dogs with a lot of bone and substance is to get yourself a good begin from birth, good serving, warm, dry areas, and freedom for the puppies to go about and exercise themselves as they wish. Pushed exercise will make them fail on the feet. Medicine should not be required except for viruses, and the puppies should be physicked for these right after they are weaned, and again when three or four weeks old, or before when they are not thriving. If clear of worms, Newfoundland puppies will be found quite healthy, and, under appropriate conditions of food and quarters, they are easy to rear.
