Is it about learning some blows, kicks and blocks? Is it about memorizing countless types? Is it about self-defense? Is it about health and fitness? What about making new friends and interacting? And what about all of those buzzwords such as self-discipline, self-confidence... This question seems simple and easy to answer. Nevertheless the truth is that it's no simple question to answer at all, because it must be answered on many levels. What is karate really all about? Is it about learning some kicks, punches and blocks? Could it be about memorizing countless kinds? Is it about self-defense? Can it be about health and fitness? What about making friends and interacting? And how about all of those buzzwords including self-confidence, self-discipline, self-control, self-esteem and all of those other self prefixes that focus on our already aggrandized egos? Some of us have already completed our research on this subject to discover what karate is all about and we have found numerous but complimentary answers. Mainstream martial arts knowledge tells us that karate is approximately perfecting our character, being truthful and honest, never quitting, building strong heart, trying our most useful constantly, adhering to rigid discipline and etiquette, after the path or even the Way, and achieving our potential in life. I can promise when I put this question to a room high in students, most of the above responses will soon be offered and probably many others. The point of the introduction to this report is that karate is about all of the above and none of the above. It all depends upon who you're talking to. The problem is the difference between most individuals words and actions can be important. Like, showing weak strategy and bad ways while being easily distracted saying that karate is approximately concentration and discipline and then tells me that some body isnt really being honest. Saying that karate is all about health and exercise and then driving right to McDonalds after school for a Big Mac with additional fries might be equally questionable in terms of an honest exercise. Just what exactly is karate really all about? Id say its all about YOU and its all about what YOU label of it. You may make it an enjoyable and challenging hobby and family activity by engaging with other family members. You can make it a very worthwhile physical exercise by training hard and improving your health and fitness. You may also make it an incredibly tedious and frustrating pursuit that becomes potentially dangerous to both your self-confidence and your identity by not trying to accomplish your very best, and feeling like you are no good compared to everyone else in your school. Or, when I did, you can make it an ongoing goal to try to capitalize on the benefits that you were born with and gradually improve your weaknesses through the honest and fully committed practice of karate. Perfection of character doesnt mean that you never make a mistake. Looking to be honest and genuine doesn't mean that you never catch your self being hypocritical sometimes. Nor does trying your best imply that youre never tired. What's most critical from all this is your self-awareness. Through the practice and template of karate we ought to be able to regularly polish the stone that contains all of our abilities, so that we can clearly see our own reflection in all its beauty and also all of its ugliness. Gradually through consistent work, practice and knowledge of ourselves that we create through our practice, we can tip the balance of our lifes scale to positive diet and self-improvement. This inevitably leads toward helping others and finding our own place in this world. Karate, while not full in and of itself, holds many keys that lead us towards this goal.
