We are told that we are an ageing population. Many of us live to a much older age and the choices we make about the care and support we require in old age have changed. Expectations are higher and people wish for more independence. The growth of aged individuals living in the home has led to the growth in the market for adaptations and aids. These day there are disability aids that will help with all sorts of freedom and dexterity issues.

Walking aids such as wheelchairs, walking sticks and walking frames can help you move around your home and outside of the home too. Wheelchairs can be bought in all shapes, weights and sizes and can be either by hand or electrically powered. Seating aids such as support pillows, perching stools and chair raisers can all be used to make sitting down for comfort, rest or doing tasks that bit easier. Toilet helps have provided dignity and enabled people staying in their homes to complete many tasks they might choose to keep private. Although many of us are conscious of wet rooms, seated baths with opening doors and large walk in showers, it really is often the little things which make life in the toilet easier. Bathrooms could be small areas and when you yourself have mobility problems this means manoeuvrability is particularly hard. Small adaptations such as shower chairs, non- slip bath mats and raised toilet seats are occasionally all that is required to make life more comfortable.

Hoists can be included by bedroom aids to get in and out of bed, but also they can really make a difference to the bed itself. Profiling beds and Bradshaw beds are ideal for this purpose. Life much easier can be made by bed raisers too. Just like a number of these aids, it is important to understand how to use them safely and securely. It might be that moving and handling training, as an example, is needed before operating a hoist. However, there is no limit to that which you can place inside your house to ensure it is much more comfortable. stand aid uk
