DIY driftwood takes some time, however it could save you a lot of money. Some small pieces cost more than $20. Also, the soak approach (minus salt) will work for store-bought driftwood. Store bought driftwood is washed and has not been soaked. This may lead to tannins being released into your container

What youll need:

Driftwood, which is often found everywhere. It does not always need to come from the water the saltless water softener . You might find it in the woods, provided that it is weathered down and looks unique. Also make sure the wood is not rotting.

LARGE soaking container, I take advantage of a 15 woman rubber maid container.

Tank Salt, I take advantage of Doc Wellfish model. This can be used as an all-natural means of killing bacteria and parasites.

First rung on the ladder, clean off-your wood! Be sure all bark and trash are taken from the wood (or itll fall down in-your tank!). Once full, boil the water in the BIG container and put tank salt. I use of a tablespoon per gallon. Boil the entire piece for about 2-4 hours depending on your size. You'll need to boil the other half if you could only match half the wood within the pot then.

You can transfer your wood into the rubber maid box after the boil is full. Add water before the entire bit of wood is under water (you may also add salt if you want). In the event the wood does not sink place something on top of it until it does. Itll drain following a fortnight. Youll spot the water develop into tea-ish color. It's caused by the tannins which are released to the water. In the event that you didnt soak the wood, the water in your tank will be this color. Tannins are natural and some fishes actually like it since itll make them feel more in the home. Itll also influence your PH, Im not sure about GH or KH. Youll have to do water changes every-other day to clean the water. This may take weeks or months visit site .

You will have to soak your wood for another week without the salt, once the color of the soak water suffices. This will ensure that the wood doesn't keep any salt that may leak into your tank.

Once soaking is complete transfers the wood into your tank and wash the wood well. Don't keep the wood from water for quite a long time o-r it will move.
