Is  this a phase? That is very doubtful. The market for these devices runs in the very technical and professional entirely towards the pre-teen socialite. The merchandise crosses all demographics and  because of decreasing cost - it sees no economic boundaries as well. But what is it which makes smartphones so  interesting? Smartphones give us the ability to not merely carry our data around with us wheresoever we get, it also  gives the ability to us to modify that data any place - any time, as i  informed earlier. In the current "reality" based era, we are always seeking the chance to capture and relive a minute.
