The exhibit was chosen after it first showed in Brussels then was offered to the MIM. Museum curators felt like it would be a good fit because the exhibit allowed for education on an instrument that can have so many different variations. Around 30 of the African thumb pianos that are on display actually came from the MIM's private collection and the rest of them came from the collection in Brussels.
