We all know that, in case a certain number of us attempted to put that maxim fully into practice, the whole social fabric would drop to pieces, the evil would simply take possession of our lives and our homes, and would do whatever they just as in us. This appears to us to be the greatest ideal; yet to show this doctrine only will be comparable to condemning a huge portion of humanity.

Not merely so, it would be making men feel that they were constantly doing wrong, and cause in them scruples of conscience in all their actions; it would damage them, and that constant self - disapproval would breed more vice than any weakness would.
