Wool as a carpet materials are perfect for regions where there is a lot of moisture content in the atmosphere. Wool carpets have been found to be the most durable carpets available and are ideal for rough and hard usage, as it provides excellent piling high quality. Woolen carpets have the capability to repel water and also act as a good warmth insulator. On the downside, Wool carpet is quite expensive when compared to the other materials and woolen carpet also requires proper care, so that it is not infested by moths.
Oriental rugs are mostly made from silk and are well known for its silky finish and lustrous look. They are usually used in applications that don't have much of deterioration as the fibers used for making silk carpets are incredibly soft in nature. These are quite expensive and sometimes more costly than the woolen materials. Cotton carpet is the 2nd most used carpet through people around the globe following the woolen carpet. Cotton is the primary material preferred by carpets that are made by hand weaving. Cotton is mostly used because the basic yarn within knotted carpet manufacturing process. Cotton carpet is cheaper compared to woolen and man made fiber carpets. On the downside, cotton carpet attracts and maintains more dirt and dust when compared to the woolen and man made fiber material.
Synthetic fibers such as viscose, polypropylene and polyacrylis have also been extensively used in making carpets recently. These are artificial fibers that are made out of a compound much like plant cellulose. Viscose looks greatly similar to silk as well as comes at a cheaper rate than Silk. But unlike man made fiber, Viscose wears out quickly and also attracts more quantity of dust and dirt. Similarly carpets made from polypropylene looks similar to a woolen carpet, but are cheaper than the woolen carpets . It has a good heat insulation capability and very durable in nature. But it doesn't have the heat regulation capabilities of a wool carpet. Polyacrylis is very similar to polypropylene in character and feel. Having seen the different types of carpet materials, the next important susceptible to cover is the carpet manufacturing techniques. There are 6 different techniques available for making carpets and this strategy is dependent on the type of materials that is used to make carpet. These are Hand knotting, Machine weaving, tufting,Loopand velvet piling, Dietary fiber bonding and Hands looming. Hand knotting needs a lot of craftsmanship from the carpet weaver and is usually used for making contemporary carpets. Device weaving technique came after hand weaving and were capable of producing carpets that looked similar to the hand weaved carpets in texture and design. Piling is one of the well-liked methods that have been used extensively to make carpets in recent times. Piling comes in 2 forms, namely the actual loop piling as well as velvet piling and it is capable of creating carpets that may last for a longer length.
