The sounds of the English letters /k/ (often "c") and /g/

It's not just the sounds /p/ and /b/ which are voiced or unvoiced. For the sounds represented by the letters "k" y "g" in the International Phonetic Alphabet the same distinction holds. By the way, do you see that it'll maybe not be hard for you to understand the designs of the IPA? Most of the symbols, like the e and the g are already familiar for you. They're the words of the alphabet.

The IPA symbol k interests us today. It's the "hard" sound of the letter "c", the sound that the letter "c" typically takes prior to the words "a", "o", and "u", for instance in the language car, layer, cube.

The noise of the characters "t" and "d"

This difference involving the characters "d" and "t" in English is essential in the problem of days gone by tense of verbs. We will address this elsewhere.

Also there is another pair of voiced and unvoiced consonants, the sounds represented in English by the letters "s" and "z." We will study them within their most significant contexts, that of the third person singular of the present of verbs, and that of the plural of nouns.

However for now, concentrate on the consonants we only looked over.
